INHERITED BELIEF

One way to get ones family angry is to announce that one is about to leave ones religion of birth. There is this expectation that a child automatically inherits the beliefs of the parent. There is a column for religion in an infants birth certificate and it is to be filled with the parent own religion. But the birth certificate did not ask for the parent birth certificate but the child’s. The opinion of the child was not sought . Yet whenever the child comes of age and decides to leave the religion of his birth, the parents get angry.

Some religion encourages her members to discriminate against and disown their children for attempting to leave the parent religion. Other religion ask parent to kill any child who abhors such thought . Of course every religion wants more members. One way to do this is to promise after death reward to entice non members to join. Another way is to make punnitive laws to prevent existing members including infants. from leaving th toe religion. Their goal is to have more members

Civilization has made it ok for a grown up child to choose a career path different from that of the parent but it is unacceptable to deviate from one religion of birth. The parents did not take into consideration the individual characteristics of the child. An extrovert is more likely to feel attracted to a religion that gives members freedom of self expression and varieties. To compel the individual to belong to a religion that promotes repeatation of ancient prayers could be boring. Similarly, To compel an optimistic child to actively partake in a religious gathering that constantly preaches sin, hell, rapture, crucifixion,co tondemnation , etc makes one guilty. A positive approach would have been better.

To force belief to children and compell them to hold on to them for life is an infringement . the child religious freedom was not taken into consideration. Each child ought to be exposed to various teaching at an early age . He should visit the church, the mosque ,the shrine and other religious and irreligious group and study with them. and be free to choose according to it’s feeling. Wherever he feels joyous,that is his path . The parent can only bless him. This will teach him see things from various perspective at an early age and will make him more tolerance of those from other religious group. In this way, we build a next generation devoid of religious based violence.

Good Killers

Children grow up to obey authorities. They receive approval, praise and reward for doing what authority approves and receive disapproval for non-compliance. Their cognitive abilities is still developing so they are unable to distinguish what is right from what is wrong independently.

Children take this teaching to adulthood even when the thinking ability to reason is fully developed. Grown up children are quick to obey authorities even in times when doing so is immoral. While that of children is understandable as. Incompetency to distinguish between what good from what is bad, adult who commit the same act are out of cowardice . They do not want to be held liable to the consequence of their action so would rather hand the decision-making to an external agent .

For example, an armed robber who threatens one to give away a percentage of his money or risk getting killed is not a perceived as an authority by The victim . The government through its law enforcement agents like Police may threaten you to give wm a percentage of your money or risk going to jail. The clergy threaten one to give away with a certain percentage of his money or risk external damnation. The armed robber is not an authority and the victim will not feel guilty for resisting him but to resist the clergy or the police would be seen as illegal or immoral. The police and the preacher are seeing as agents of authority who act on behalf of government and God respectively whereas. In that case, it is the individual perception of authority that matters.

Sometimes this blind allegiance to authority distort our ability to differentiate what is good from what is bad. It is wrong to kill your fellow man. But when the perceived authority asks one to do so, he is expected to comply. The effect of this can be disastrous. When an “bad” person gets to the seat of power and gives a bad directive, good people tuned down their moral conscience and obey. Adolph Hitler on his own can kill a handful of persons at a time but Adolph Hitler as the commander General of the arm forces can kill a million persons. In other words,. Adolph Hitler is not the problem but the good-hearted soldiers who would never hurt a fly but kill their fellow human without guilt on the order of authority. Religion is not the problem but the good-hearted persons who will not hesitate to butcher their fellow human on the command if the religious books and leaders whom they perceive as agents of supreme Authority.

The authority understands that to continue to have control over their subjects, they have to instill the doctrine of blind obedience. Law enforcement agencies do not encourage their staff to question their superior decision. To disobey a superior immoral order could amount to severe consequence. My heart goes to the dead soldiers who risk their lives believing they are fighting for a just cause whereas they were used as Pawns fighting for the politician who would not do the same for them. Religion encourages members not to ask question. Blind obedience which is nicknamed ” Faith” is emphasized as a sign of a true believer. Whoever question the holy book is a doubter, heretic and should be stoned to death. Health authorities and Scientist tells us vaccine they approved are effective and we must believe them and take them against our will. Whoever posts information doubting the safety of the vaccine is accused of posting false information and the website banned. Meanwhile, scientist are accused of inventing the same virus in a laboratory. Yet we are to believe and obey them . Can one preside over a case where he is a suspect? Medical autonomy is thrown to the wind. Individuals no longer have the right to choose their medication. Soon, authority will choose our food for us. Authority comes in various shades

The aim of this article is not eradicate authority completely. Like Dr Milgram said, obedience to authority may be necessary in certain context . No Individual is inherently good or bad . Individuals can apply golden rule when making decisions. Any of us can fall victim to the pressure of the situation and would love to be treated fairly. Power changes hand. Religion is like a double-edged knife. It can be used for Good and for bad, To build and to destroy. A knowledgeable person can quote a scriptural passage to justify any act he wishes. No wonder religion accommodates every individual regardless of character.

However, certain religion tends to promote individualism while other religion promotes collectivism. Empaths and kind-hearted individual are more likely to enjoy a gathering that promotes suppression of Individual needs for the sake of the majority. Such teaching are alien to narcissistic persons. Moreover, religion teaches application of rule to everyone. The golden rule and other virtues of fairness are promoted. Narcissistic belief they are center of attention and deserve special and higher favors and not to be treated equally with those he is better than. But he also wants to be liked by the society. So he pretends to agree with the religious teaching while revealing his real self to his immediate family members.

Traditional religion has little to offer the grandiose narcissistic. Churches that teaches that one is a sinner that would be punished in hell bruises the ego of the narcissistic. He deserves to be exempted from such punishment for no reason.His sins should be ignored and forgiven while he continues to commit them.Sermons that condemn the pride and praises the humble are not what he seeks to traditional churches like Catholic Church, Jehovah witness, Anglican etc. teaches members to sacrifice personal goal, ambition, dreams for the sake of the kingdom. Such churches are not vehicles for personal fulfillment.

It won’t be long before he leaves the church in search of another. Most times, they leave for a Protestant church that alters scriptural teaching for the sake of the congregation. Most Pentecostal churches are magnet for people with such traits A Smaller church in need of members. A church that tells members that faith alone without works is enough to make heaven. Even though the passenger dies in a motor accident, the narcissistic would be unhurt because he is unique. This feeds his narcissistic tendency. He would actively participate in such gathering. A smaller gathering where one may rise to become a deacon or member of the pastoral council.

A new position especially one accompanied with the title ; Bishop, Pastor, Evangelist etc comes with a feeling of superiority over others. An individual who receive a new title begins to feel like a new shift has taken place within him. That comes with a tendency to look down on those without such titles. enforces the feeling of entitlement. Even when one does not actively demand it, the church members may begin to give such person special favors and respect. Members begin to kneel down and beg him to lay his hands on them. He feels powerful.A narcissist not only demand it but enjoys it .He begins to feel he is truely special from others. His narcissistic tendency increases.It takes a matter of time before his true nature comes out. He begins to preach a message of Grace. As a believer, you do not deserve to suffer. A feeling of entitlement. God owes him riches and wealth for believing in him. He begins to grumble about blessings not received instead of being grateful for those received. His sermon is means to glorify himself. Soon, he sees himself as better than the general overseer. He falls out with the owner and takes the next step.

He forms his own church or cult where he has autonomous power. Furthermore, he looks for gullible persons to recruit. Furthermore, he exaggerates a childhood incident as a sign that he was born special. He begins to elevate himself to a position higher than human beings and closer to God. Furthermore, he equates himself to scriptural prophets He replaces Moses, Abraham, with his name during prayer and admonishes members to do the same. Furthermore, he perceives himself as equal if not better than his scriptural characters.

Someone may wonder what religion, soccer and epidemic are doing in one sentence. The first signals faith, the second joy and the third sorrow. They all contain the letter “E”. The first two were affected by the third. Keep guessing.

A child is told he is bad. He is threatened by hell. Of course the human mind dreads pain. The person who threatens him with hell offers him heaven under givers own condition. Even a fool would choose pleasure over pain. The child accepts the condition. Religion wins. To take it a step further, religion develop a theory linking your unpleasant condition to your inability to give, and she has a cure for your suffering, but you need to pay tax and tithe to receive them. It is difficult to accuse him of greed. He is only here to help you.

If health workers were to instruct the whole humanity to stay at home, the human would refuse. A better way is to create an artificial virus or rather over- hype the mortality rate of a newly discovered disease. Then, tell the world to stay at home. They are more likely to obey. To take it a step further, produce a vaccine or a cure and watch countries struggle to buy. It is difficult to accuse pharmaceutical companies of greed, they deserve encouragement for finding a solution.

In both cases, the organization may take advantage of the human emotion of “Fear”. Whenever one plants fear on others, they are more liable to be controlled. The cashier is less likely to part away with cash unless at gun point. Here, the robber took advantage of fear of loosing his life. Discover a terrible condition. Exaggerate the condition and link them to his fears. Then sell a solution. He is more likely to accept your solution.

If any truth exist at all,it shout be that common saying which is found in all world  Religion. Every  mathematics textbook agrees that one + one is two.

To be certain that our belief is true, we ought to compare them with other scriptures and search for similarities and differences. The similarities draws us closer to the truth while the differences makes us question it’s authenticity. But we don’t want see the possibility that we might have been wrong. We try not to investigate . We call it faith.

Faith is the enemy of truth seeking. By hoping something is true or going to be true does not make it true.To believe in things that are not true can be dangerous.It is worse than gambling.We want our belief to be true  so badly that we ignore evidence,reason and our common sence. 

If your virgin daughter tells you she is pregnant, we will not believe her. If your teacher tells you be split the sun into three parts,we will call him a liar. We would spread the stories if we found them in an ancient scripture.

We believe In a book that somebody told us that somebody told the person that another person said is true without making attempt to verify its authenticity. This is second hand truth and second hand truth is called hearsay . Lawyers are aware that second hand truth is subjected to mistake so they do not admit it in the court of law . Truth should be based on experience.Eye withness testimony Is admissible in the court of law.

I heard a group tried to test the effectiveness of prayer. They had a group of sick patient prayed for and another group to act as control. The former recovered quicker. This is an example of ones belief tested. You may replicate it if you like. By checking your claim, you become more confident of it’s authenticity.

Beneath belief

We attach too much power to our belief. This can be counter productive. One who believes his religion is the best in morals would be dissapointed to find out they the religious leaders is involved in immoral activities. He may be dissapointed and vow to change church.

Another who strongly tithe regularly may feel betrayed for being sacked. It is like the God did not fulfill his own part of the bargain. This may lead to a rejection of all Religion

Someone who love violence would look for the biblical verse justifying violence perpetuate his act.

When we nurture a belief into truth, it becomes serious. We cannot no longer joke out of them.

They teach us dogmatic belief Adapted from ancient writing To make us act by their script And ignore our dream .

We memorize the rules like prisoners . We live the life of mediocre .         Lawyers wear the badge of Freedom fighter  . In Religious centers praising the jailers  

Ethnicity leads to group Identification. Group identification leads to division division leads to competition. Competition hinders cooperation

Holding on to dogmatic belief. We know is not working.         And hope it  turn out well            is the road to stagnation

A period of Isolation                    To examine Religious assumption. . Subject them to experimental investigation. Wake up from mental limitation

Reject all societal hypothesis That does not align with reality with immediate alacrity To free up mental capacity.

Break the chains that bind. Asking Question is no crime . Finding answers is our right . Reclaim your power to live our own life

Left and Right Thinkers

The Neurologist classifies the brain into left and the right part. The right part is a center for emotion while the left hemisphere is the center of thinking. Children with a highly developed left hemisphere take first position in class and represent the class in inter-school competition. Right thinkers top the class in bullying and noise making and represent the class in inter-house sport competition. What they lack in intellectual analysis, they make up in physical hardiness. They are usually in majority. Left thinkers make great class captain because they are academically ahead.

This classification expands to the larger society Right thinkers usually top in illiteracy, Polio infection and poverty. Their top values are :

Dress code for women. Blasphemy laws confiscating alcoholic drinks. Cattle Rearing. Underage marriage.

The left thinkers are concerned about making lives better. Their top values are:

Breaking up /restructuring. Improving the economy persistent ASUU strike. improving policing and security High cost of living.

A right thinker

Left thinkers are willing to push aside tradition and scriptures to advance a goal. Right thinkers would prefer to remain stagnant to deviating from scriptural and traditional belief. The right thinkers are looking at making under aged child legitimate voters. The bill may be passed into law eventually as right thinkers have more population among the legislature. The left thinkers would rather ban underage marriage. Unlike left thinkers, Religious belief play a major role in the decision-making of right thinkers . Right thinkers are unwilling to consider scientific study of the harm done on the girl child as a result of early pregnancy as long as her religion approves of such. They would rather stone the messenger and destroy his findings. Right thinkers shifts scripture when it does not align with reality.

The right thinkers contribute less to the regional revenue and are more in number. Their numerical advantage gives them an advantage during election. They tend to rule left thinkers. When right thinkers rule, left thinkers feel marginalized. When right thinkers rule, left thinkers feel marginalized. An external body might be needed to bridge the gap but the right thinkers rigidity makes it difficult. A doctor might be needed to divide the duo but the leftist would not want that either. We have a serious matter in our hands. We have to be careful, so It does not lead to uprising in the future.

Trained to Divide

Religion stains whatever it touches. Religion has caused division among senior advocate of Nigeria. Ignoring the problem of religion in this country never manages to push the problem away. Ignoring the problem often compounds the problem until it grows into a mountain .

. An average Christian wishes  everyone is a Christian. An average Muslim wishes everyone becomes a Muslim. Each tries to project his desire to the other. Whenever a Muslim is in power, Christians fear he is on a mission to islamise the country.  Whenever a Christian becomes president, Muslims fear the same.This fear makes it difficult for them to cooperate amicably . Christian trust Christian leaders, Muslims trust Muslim leaders.

Our education system is fueling this saperation.  From primary school, children learn mathematics, English language, Basic science and other languages together. But when it comes to religious studies, Christians are divided from Muslims. This continues until the child finishes secondary school. The school saperates the children as kids and expect them to miraculously work together as adults.

The academia should develop a general religious knowledge curriculum. At an early age, children ought to be introduced to all form of religion outside the religion of their parents. A growing child should have basic knowledge of Christianity, Islam, African Traditional Religion, Buddhism etc.  Limiting him to one knowledge alone create a narrow mind and makes him difficult to tolerate and work with another Religion for which he never knew existed. When we delve into other belief, we become intrigued by the similarities. We become more accepting .

Christian should not wish everyone were a Christian. If everyone thinks alike, the world would be bored. God created us different for a reason . Muslim should wish every Christian develop a greater understanding and acceptance of Islam while remaining firmly within their own Religion.

Evolution of belief

Man came into this world surrounded with mysteries. He searched for someone to answer his questions. He found no physical person competent enough to satisfy his Inquisition, he looked at nature . the idea of God( s) was attributed as the only all knowledgeable one. Who is this god?

first, he thought they were various god for different purpose. ” may be God is a rock” so they began to worship rock. others taught he was trees and they began worshipping trees.Others calved Idols

Then one man thought. A god should be powerful, stronger than man and not these Idols man can break with the hands and matchet.Then he looked up and realised human could never touch the sky.
” That must be God”/ he thought.
He told others his new idea.some rebuked him,others mocked him but few accepted his idea. As decades passed, the few who believed multiplied. The new concept of God became popular.
Higher Evolved man began to place human government quality on this god.The early men obeyed law and order and began to see god as a big white beard man with a cane waiting to punish whoever disobeyed his law. God became a moral policeman, judge or king whose anger is second to none.

This was the common religion until one man named Jesus whose reasoning was higher than that of the people camebup with a better idea. He saw loopholes in the existing belief.To him, God is like a father and not a policeman.His idea was a religion of love and not one of fear.After centuries of rejection, and persecution ,the average man finally accepted his teaching.Others out of loyalty to their for fathers chose to stick to existing teaching.

The concept of a loving God who would burn his children in hell for disobedience seems not to go well with many morally sensitive persons.This has led to a group called DEIST who believe God is like a soccer coach who does not intervene with the natural laws of the game of life.
As man keeps evolving, new ideas are formed.
Many new religion of today see god as a form of energy who does not exist outside the world but is part of creation.God is in you and me.
It seems new religion are more tolerant of non conformist.
This begs the question, which religion is the most authentic?
None, Ensure you are well informed about as many as you can and then choose the one that alligns with your own level of evolution.
Be open to discussing your religion with others.It is absolutely normal to change your mind.change is a sign of growtn. It is normal to discard a previous belief that has lost its usefulness for a new one.
One may choose to be irreligious, a passive observer who derives words of wisdom from all sacred text to construct his own belief system. THE CHOICE IS YOURS

The message of born again has been misinterpreted in various ways. Today, to be born again simply means mumuring certain words of accepting Jesus into one life.

A newly born child is oblivious of the status quo. He has no belief, no knowledge, nothing. As he grows,he is influenced by teachers,parents, clergy etc . He becomes a conformist to the society expectation. He looses his identity . He takes on the words,dress, religion, pleasure of his fellow .

To make heaven on Earth,the first step is to loosen our grip on all we think. Let go of your opinion, morality, deeply held belief. All these make up the false self. To be born again is to scrape off the false self , the society- taught way of thinking and open oneself to a new one. By dying to our old self, we let go of all previous teaching we have ever received. A born again person experience a change in perspective. It seems his values is turned upside down. He takes on a new personality and mindset. He leaves old friends. The world around him no longer make sence. Things you used to enjoy no longer serve you. You tend to spend more time alone.

Anyone who has never changed his core beliefs or religion is yet to die to his old self. Dying to old self is prerequisite to a new birth. A seed has to be buried to the ground before it can germinate. Many atheist and agnostic are dead to their old self. They are one step ahead than most of us who are yet to question our belief. The second step is observation. Not one created by someone else but one based on his own seeking and experience. A born again person does not take things because it is repeated by many or asserted by majority or written in a holy book. He listens to all side and filters them based on his reason and experience.

Born again persons are original in thoughts and deed. He is saperated from the mass . To be born again comes with a price of violating recognises order. This lead to grave consequences including death .

A missing ingredient

Nigeria is a blessed country made up of different ethnic groups. These groups find it difficult to live peacefully among each other.There is an eye of suspicion that arises whenever come in contact with one who is different from us. We do not trust them.

The ability to get along with those with different mindset is essential to build a brand new country. It involves patience, understanding and acceptance of those of different ethnic group, language, religion and political views.

We ought to understand that when everyone thinks and behave in the same manner,the nation would be boring. Variety is the spice of life .diversity is central to humanity. A tolerant person recognises that his enemy has the right to think his own thought and live his own life as long as he doesn’t interfere in that of others. It gives to others the same freedom we crave.

A tolerant Muslim ignores hurtful remark from a thirteen years old. A tolerant Christian does not loose his cool when handling difficult situation. Both understand that even though everyone believe in the same religion, their understanding of that Religion would differ.A tolerant APC leader forgives the errors of PDP leaders and not constantly picking on them. A tolerant prison warder respects the right of prisoners. A tolerant spouse do not pick quarrel constantly with each other.

When we force the minority tribe into doing our bidding, hatred and contempt is not avoidable. By making certain allowance,we transform a harsh house into a sweet one

One way to increase our religious tolerance level is to study more about the other person Religion. Do this without the intention to convert to their religion but to understand why they believe in what they believe.l remember harbouring a slight contempt for Muslims who do not partake in eating a cow killed by a Muslim.I saw this as segregation.It was not until I inquired from a Muslim that I understand it had more to do with the love for cows that they do not want to watch it suffer while dying . They believe cows should die a quick death so they kill cows in a specialway using sharp knife while offering a special prayer. My contempt was based on ignorance. My newly acquired knowledge errased my false assumption

Visit other states.make friends with people from other tribes. try to learn another language.If there is going to be peace in this nation,it would require a new approach to striving for political and Religious power, an approach that is no longer based on competition,but one that sees all as one through competition and partnership. we will learn to handle our differences without aggression.open our heart to the possibility of ethno- religious unity.Find a common thread that runs through us all and forget about converting one another. to sharing.

To doubt is not a sin

Have you ever wondered if there are errors while translating the Bible to various languages? What if the Bible was written by man under no inspiration from the holy Spirit? What if everything I believe are false?

Many Christians see doubt as dangerous thinking that originate from the evil forces. A little skeptisn on one doctrine could lead to another doubt and the ripple spreads until one ends up questioning everything one ever knows. Doubtees are less likely to attend religious institution as they seek information outside the Religion established sources As a result, questioning is not encouraged. Most skepticlearn to keep their questions hidden in their head because certain things are not to be questioned. One should rely on faith.

In reality, doubt is a characteristics of human nature and necessary for ones faith to mature . Each of us grew up accepting the belief of others . Experience makes us examine those belief and compare them to reality. The wider the gap, the need to doubt . Men by nature of their higher reasoning ability experience more doubt than women

God gives us freewill which includes freedom to.
